This week, California voters passed a ban on confining farm animals in cages. The National Association of Egg Farmers opposed the measure. President Ken Klippen says the negative impacts of this ban will be felt in other states and will mean egg prices will rise dramatically in California. He says there will also be severe health effects.
He says their next move will be to push for an amendment in the farm bill to protect interstate commerce that’s being sponsored by Iowa Congressman Steve King.
Klippen says besides Congressman King’s support, his group also has an ally in the next House Ag Committee Chairman, Collin Peterson.
Now that California has passed Proposition 12, a dozen states have laws against extreme animal confinement. Some of the nation’s largest food retailers like Walmart, Costco, Burger King and hundreds of others all require their meat and egg suppliers to eliminate cages.
