An egg choice bill has passed both houses of the Iowa Legislature this week. House File 2408 requires Iowa grocers participating in the Women’s Infants and Children’s supplemental food program to offer conventional, as well as cage free eggs. Iowa Poultry and Egg Association Executive Director Kevin Stiles says his group backed the measure because it fits with their policy.
He says by being able to offer either cage free or conventional eggs to low-income Iowans it assures them a low-cost protein choice and will increase egg sales.
Stiles says the legislation is now headed to Governor Kim Reynolds and he expects it to be signed.
The bill’s provisions don’t require a grocery store to stock eggs if it does not stock specialty eggs for sale or to stock conventionally produced eggs for sale if it had not stocked such eggs for sale prior to January 1, 2018.
