This year’s drought is having an impact in West River South Dakota. South Dakota Stock Grower’s Executive Director Silvia Christen says some producers are culling their herds and the chances for getting even one hay crop are not good.

She says there wasn’t much of a hay crop last year and that coupled with hot, dry conditions and in some cases late frost hasn’t helped.

Christen says as Congress works on the new farm bill, livestock producers may have to look to them for help with livestock disaster programs and any other possible federal assistance.

Christen says if some rains come soon it could help replenish some of the pastures but the hay crop is pretty much gone.
