Drought conditions in South Dakota this spring have hammered the spring wheat crop especially in the Central and North Central part of the state. South Dakota Wheat Commission Executive Director Reid Christopherson says if the drought continues on its current pace the total spring wheat crop will be a disaster.

He says even if the rains come it’s too late to help the spring wheat.

Christopherson says it’s been the perfect storm of low acreage, low commodity prices, disease and drought that’s made it very tough for wheat growers.

Christopherson advises growers to scout their fields and get advice from their agronomists
, extension specialists and crop insurance agents on what to do going forward.
