The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows much of the region is in some level of drought, which increases the potential for animal health issues. South Dakota State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven says forage quality is decreased and nutrients are being depleted, which can impact the cow’s reproductive health and efficiency.
He says there are a growing number of cows being culled to save on water and feed resources as indicated by higher numbers at the livestock auction markets.
Oedekoven says another area of concern is water quality, so he suggests producers take water samples and have them tested.
Oedekoven says livestock producers also need to be on the alert for nitrate poisoning in new feeds and anthrax.
