The ever expanding drought across the Northern Plains along with the recent dog days of summer with temperatures in the 90s and into 100 occasionally are presenting challenges for cattle producers. SDSU Extension Beef Feedlot Management Specialist Warren Rusche says making sure there’s enough water available for cattle is a primary concern.
He says adjusting feed is important in helping cattle deal with the heat.
Rusche advises feeding cattle in the late afternoon and early evening hours. He also says when sprinkling cattle to keep them cool make sure you don’t’ create a mist.
Rusche says sprinkling cattle is most effective when there’s some air flow occurring.
