The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has released their interim final rule clarifying livestock definitions in hours of service regulations. The regulation exempts haulers from transporting ag commodities including livestock from HOS requirements to a location within 150 air mile radius from the source. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane says more relief is needed although the interim regulation is a step in the right direction.
He says more revisions are needed in the future to ensure livestock can be shipped effectively, efficiently and safely and they’ll be pushing for that in the future.
Lane says NCBA continues to weigh in with regulators and inform them of the stellar safety record livestock haulers have and continue to have.
The interim final rule defines the terms any agricultural commodity, livestock and non-processed food as used in the definition of agricultural commodity under the Hours of Service regulations.
