Divide Growing Among Biotech Labeling Interests

Divide Growing Among Biotech Labeling Interests

The divide among those supporting a biotech labeling bill is growing. While Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack is pushing lawmakers to approve mandatory disclosure through the use of QR codes, Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley is sponsoring a bill to create mandatory labels. And South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal says they still support a voluntary approach.

He credits Senators Amy Klobuchar and Heidi Heitkamp for backing the voluntary labeling bill in committee and is encouraging ranking member Debbie Stabenow and other Democrats to get on board with Senator Robert’s legislation.

VanderWal says if the Senate doesn’t act soon, it could create a negative economic consequence.

Senator Robert’s voluntary labeling bill could come up for a vote on the Senate floor as soon as Wednesday.
