Diversity leaders at the University of South Dakota have been appointed to the advisory council for The National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE). Intercultural Programming Coordinator at USD, Lena Tran, says a Diversity leader is someone who is trying to create a better understanding of the unique differences of each individual
Tran says community involvement is important to being a diversity leader. She says anyone with passion and the will to obtain better communication skills to understand different perspectives in the world, can be effective
Tran says the beauty of the national advisory council is a lot of the other members are from communities of color or marginalized communities, and will bring a unique perspective
NCORE works at “assisting higher education institutions to create inclusive higher education environments, programs, and curriculum; improve campus racial and ethnic relations; and expand opportunities for educational access and success by culturally diverse, traditionally underrepresented populations.” This year’s conference runs May 31st through June 4th
