The candidates for the District 40 Senate seat in Nebraska met for a debate in Hartington Wednesday evening.

Keith Kube of Crofton is challenging incumbent Senator Tyson Larson of O’Neill.

Corrections, prisons, good time and early releases of prisoners have become major issues in the state.

Kube says prisons in Nebraska are often seen as economic development for the towns they are in.

Larson says he wants to see the so called “good time” changed to earned time.

A prisoner gets a day of good time for every day they serve.

Kube says prison reform can only happen after a series of questions are answered.

Larson says there were corrections reforms introduced in this years legislative session, but were blocked in committee.

The candidates also touched on school funding, and keeping young people in Nebraska.
