It has been extremely dry during the last few months, with many parts of the Midwest missing out on winter snowfall. However, a climatologist with the U-S Department of Agriculture says deep subsoil moisture levels are in good shape. Dennis Todey is the Director of the Midwest Climate Hub, based at Ames, Iowa. He says rains from last autumn helped re-charge subsoil moisture levels. Todey says the surface top soil levels are dry, but once a seed is able to form its roots, there is sufficient moisture deep down. He says the adequate moisture levels are location specific. Todey admits more rains are needed, but he says the farmers should benefit during this crop season from last autumn’s rains.
