A meeting was held in Delmont, South Dakota last night to address long term recovery efforts after a tornado completely totaled 40 homes and left 8 more with major damage on May 10th. The town has done major cleanup already, with lots of work still to be done. The Long Term Disaster Recovery Team will receive assistance from South Dakota Lutheran Social Services. LSS Statewide Disaster Response Director, Lisa Adler says that the community will struggle, but they will have plenty of help.
There are a handful of residents who are considering rebuilding in Delmont, but many face financial challenges. A governor’s house has been placed in the town for residents to consider. Adler says one of the biggest challenges that faces the recovery is the lack of capital.
The meeting last evening addressed the July 1st debris removal deadline, the regular newsletter updates, and donation information. People also expressed concerns with the waste water management, as there aren’t enough residents using the water to sufficiently flush the system.
Delmont plans to continue with a Fourth of July celebration. Anyone with questions about recovery, cleanup, or volunteering is asked to call 605.212.9605.
