Debate Rages on About Proper Way to Finance and Monitor Iowa Water Quality Initiatives

Members of the Iowa House spent two hours last night (Monday) debating the proper way to finance and monitor NEW state-sponsored water quality initiatives. Republicans want to divert water usage fees and gambling taxes to pay for water quality projects in cities and on farms. Republican Representative Pat Grassley of New Hartford touted the plan.

Democratic Representative Chuck Isenhart (EYE-zen-hart) of Dubuque says the plan is “pretty thin” on measuring progress.

The bill now goes to the Iowa Senate where it faces an uncertain future in its current form. Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal says Democrats will unveil their own approach to addressing the state’s water quality problem this week.
