A filibuster against a bill to repeal Nebraska’s motorcycle helmet law will continue this week.
Senator Mike Gloor of Grand Island opposes the bill and has been counting votes. A move to “bracket” the bill…or shelve it for the remainder of the session…fell only four votes short of passing.
Supporters need those 33 votes to end the filibuster and force a vote on the bill.
The sponsor of the bill that would repeal the mandatory motorcycle helmet law expresses frustration as debate stretches on.
Senator Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins says he has tried to reach a compromise with opponents.
The legislature has debated the bill for about five-and-a-half hours. A vote to end a filibuster traditionally comes after eight hours.
