Supporters of the referendum petition drive to get the death penalty on the ballot next year in Nebraska are confident it will withstand a legal challenge.
Opponents have filed suit, claiming organizers didn’t follow state law.
Attorney Bob Evnen of Lincoln, a board member of Nebraskans for the Death Penalty, expects to win in court and for Nebraskans to vote on the issue. . .
Evnen says just because the governor supported the effort and donated to it, doesn’t make him a sponsor. . .
The lawsuit has been filed in Lancaster County District Court.
Verification of the signatures gathered continues, with more than enough verified to place the issue on the November ballot next year.
