The deadline for those pushing to place the death penalty on the November ballot in Nebraska next year is rapidly approaching.
A referendum petition drive has until Thursday to turn signatures in to the Secretary of State.
Spokesman Chris Peterson with Nebraskans for the Death Penalty says the group has had success gathering signatures throughout the state, but has found the strongest support for its effort in northeast Nebraska. . .
If the petition effort gathers around 57-Thousand signatures, capital punishment goes to a vote of the people. If around 114-Thousand are gathered, the drive can stop the Unicamerals repeal of the death penalty from going into effect. . .
Peterson says he’s cautiously optimistic the campaign has reached at least the first threshold, because he says a majority of Nebraskans support the death penalty. . .
ACLU of Nebraska has a counter drive underway, urging people to not sign the petitions.
