Death Penalty Drugs Ordered

Last week state officials announced the purchase of two drugs, pancuronium bromide and sodium thiopental, in order to carry out the death penalty. Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson says once the drugs arrive they will proceed with state protocol.

Opponents of the death penalty have threatened a legal challenge regarding the source of the drugs. Peterson says in another case in 2012 a judge ruled the source was accurate and the process was appropriate so he doesn’t expect that to be a problem.

Nebraska lawmakers have one vote left on a bill that would do away with the state’s death penalty law. Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson has no idea how that final vote will play out.

Governor Pete Ricketts promised to veto any repeal of the death penalty.
