Death Penalty Bill Advances

Nebraska is one legislative step away from repealing the death penalty.
Lawmakers voted to end a filibuster and then advance the death penalty repeal bill to the final round.
Senator Beau McCoy of Omaha led the unsuccessful filibuster, rejecting one senator’s suggestion to not describe gruesome murders. . .

Senator Ernie Chambers of Omaha sponsored the measure and dismissed the claim of the Ricketts Administration that it has obtained the drugs needed to carry out lethal injections. . .

Chambers told colleagues the governor is trying to mislead them.
Chambers bill received 30 votes on advancement, just enough to overcome a veto if all the votes hold.
