Daugaard Defends Common Core

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard said during his weekly legislative briefing that he wanted to dispel what he called misinformation over Common Core Standards…

He said however, that there are some valid concerns, that South Dakota doesn’t want federal intrusion, doesn’t want to lose the local control over curriculum, wants to protect student privacy and individual student data…

Daugaard said so long as these efforts to address valid concerns don’t abandon the importance of rigorous standards, he is open to them.  He said he has read the Common Core Standards and encourages everyone to read through them…

Daugaard said the standards don’t change the power of the school boards and control of the curriculum.
