Several members of Dakota Rural Action are expressing concern with the latest pipeline leak reported by Trans Canada near Freeman, South Dakota. Trans Canada officials have found the source of the recent leak that caused a nearly 17,000 gallons oil spill. Initial reports from the company were only 187 gallons. Dakota Rural Action member and Minnehaha County Landowner Peggy Hoogestraat says claims made earlier about the safety of the pipeline were wrong.

She also has concerns that any spills from Keystone XL 1 or any other pipeline may cause irreversible damage to the state’s water.

Hoogestraat is also worried about the damaged the recent spill will cause to the soil.

Hoogestraat says state and federal regulators need to be more diligent inspecting and monitoring Trans Canada and any of the pipeline companies when leaks occur.
