Dakota Rural Action is one of several groups nationally that have received grant funding for their beginning farmer training program. The organization received a grant of just over $225,000 to help new farmers get into the business. DRA’s Frank James says the funding will help with training, mentoring and marketing.

Lake County Farmer Aaron Johnson took part in the first year of Dakota Rural Action’s beginning farmer program in 2009. He says by taking the program he learned first hand from farmers themselves.

Johnson says the training included several different topics that all helped him get started with his operation.

Johnson is an organic farmer and grows corn, soybeans, oats and alfalfa and raises stock cows and even a few chickens. Those interested in the DRA beginning farmer program should call their office at 605-697-5204 or log onto their website for more information.
