After five years of low milk prices, U.S. dairy farmers are finally starting to see some improvement in the market. Dr. Mark Stephenson, Director of Dairy Policy Analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, says milk prices are up from last year and finally back above break even for some operations.
He says milk prices are following the stronger, but yet volatile cheese market.
Stephenson also says U.S. milk production is lower per cow and cow numbers are down 30,000 head compared to 2018 due to herd liquidation and culling.
Stephenson is not sure the stronger milk values will hold into 2020.
