Dairy Industry Faces Headwinds from Mislabeling and Unfair Canadian Pricing

The dairy industry continues to face headwinds from mislabeling of dairy products and unfair dairy pricing in Canada.  Dairy groups rejected a proposal from Canada regarding U.S. access to its dairy markets.  Global Affairs Canada outlined changes to their current scheme for allocating USMCA dairy tariff-rate-quotas.   Minnesota Milk Producers Association President Shelly DePestel says they are tired of Canada’s game playing on dairy market access.

In January, the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office announced it had won USMCA’s first-ever dispute settlement panel with Canada regarding dairy market access for U.S. farmers.

She says they’ve also pushed the new FDA commissioner to enforce present law regarding mislabeling of artificial products as dairy with no progress.

DePestel says the U.S. dairy industry is hopefully winning the battle where it counts, at the grocery store.

She says they also support the Dairy Pride Act to put more teeth in enforcement of the mislabeling of non-dairy products.
