United States dairy groups, including the National Milk Producers Federation, are asking President-elect Trump to immediately address trade problems with Canada. The U.S. dairy industry says Canada’s dairy policies are protectionist and aimed at blocking U.S. imports. The Federation’s Chris Galen says the U.S. has lost a significant amount of dairy export business and has been for some time.
He says Canada is also working on dairy policy that would allow them to dump skim milk powder into the U.S. market, which is also a violation of NAFTA.
Galen says President-elect Trump and his trade team need to move quickly to solve this problem.
The dairy group’s letter to Trump could help push his plans for reopening NAFTA for negotiation.
