Dairy groups are backing legislation to push back against soy, almond and rice producers who want some of their products labeled with dairy terms. The dairy organizations have been lobbying FDA to prevent those imitation products being labeled as dairy. South Dakota Dairy Producers Association President Marv Post says they’re also backing the Dairy Pride Act, which would prohibit products such as soy milk listed as dairy.
He says the legislation says if the product isn’t from a hooved animal it can’t be labeled as dairy.
Post says genuine milk that’s properly labeled as dairy is a clean and transparent indication to consumers that what they’re getting has nutritional value and is the real thing.
Post is hopeful the dairy groups can get the Dairy Pride Act attached to the next farm bill.
