The United States Trade Representative has begun a USMCA dispute settlement proceeding over Canada’s use of dairy tariff rate quotas. Those quotas are restricting U.S. dairy from access to the Canadian market in violation of the USMCA agreement. South Dakota Dairy Producers President Marv Post says Canada knows what’s expected of them under the USMCA and needs to be held accountable to it.

He says even though Canada has a different dairy system than most countries they knew when they signed the USMCA what they needed to do to ensure free trade.

Post says trade is critical for U.S. dairy producers and to make sure those work, they must be enforced and each country signing on must obey the deal worked out.

Over a hundred U.S. Senators and Representatives had asked the USTR to hold Canada accountable to its trade obligations under the USMCA pact.
