The third annual Dairy Fest in Brookings was a huge success. On Friday more 120 youth learned about how dairy products get to their plate through a Fork to Farm event at the SDSU dairy farm and dairy processing plant. SDSU Extension Dairy Field Specialist Tracey Erickson says Saturday was the big day and included a youth carnival at the Swiftel Center with 16 different learning stations.
Erickson says they hope families left Dairy Fest with a better understanding of how milk is produced and how the dairy products they buy are processed.
The day also included a tour of Linde Dairy near White. Jennifer Landman and her husband are a part of this 1,200 cow family operation. She says it’s critical to open their doors to the public. She says they want consumers to see the steps they go through to provide a safe product and take care of their herd.
More than 350 consumers attended the tour and also took part in lunch at the farm, which included grilled cheese, milk and SDSU ice cream.
