Dairy Executive Says Administration Must Continue Pushing Trade For Agriculture

The U.S. needs to continue pursuing an enhanced trade policy for agriculture including the dairy industry. Iowa State Dairy Association Executive Director Mitch Schulte says his state’s dairy producers need solid export markets to be able to survive economically.

He says the next administration whether its Donald Trump or Joe Biden will need to put more emphasis competing with not just Europe but also with other countries for dairy export markets.

Schulte says when nations like those in Europe put up geographical indicators on products, it makes it tough to trade freely. He says that issue where countries protect their own products at the expense of common product names needs to be overcome in all trade pacts.

He says while the E.U. in the past has used geographic indicators as a non tariff trade barrier, that problem is now cropping up with Mexico. Schulte says that needs to be addressed with the USMCA trade deal.
