United States trade negotiators are attempting to get Canada into a remake of the North American Free Trade Agreement after earlier reaching a bi-lateral deal with Mexico. National Milk Producer Federation’s Chris Galen says besides dairy, one other sticking point remains in the discussions and that has to do with dispute settlements.
He says U.S. trade officials are backing America’s dairy producers and holding the line with Canada in the NAFTA talks.
Galen says the Trump administration is supporting the U.S. Dairy Sector in their wishes for a good solid NAFTA deal rather than a quick resolution.
Earlier Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland seemed to indicate there may be a possibility of a compromise over dairy in the new NAFTA however Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has held a hard line stance on Canada’s dairy pricing program.
