One Senator says he’ll push for crop insurance cuts as the Senate debates their budget resolution this week. Arizona’s Jeff Flake has introduced a bill to eliminate premium subsidies for revenue policies with the harvest price option. The HPO is designed to protect farmers against losses when commodity prices spike and yields are poor. Environmental Working Group’s Senior Vice President for Ag and Natural Resources Craig Cox say they support the measure.
Cox says even if Senator Flake’s bill passes, farmers will still have the revenue policy in effect to cover their crop insurance needs. He says just because there would be some cuts to crop insurance it wouldn’t lead to less participation in the program.
Cox says Senators are looking to pare their overall budget and crop insurance has become so expensive it’s become a rather large target for budget cutters.
