The budget agreement passed the House late Wednesday, and thanks to quick work by the Ag Committees, the final budget will not include the proposed $3 billion in crop insurance cuts. Congressional leaders hope to address the issue issue in an omnibus spending bill and remove the cuts at that time.
Iowa Corn Grower’s President Bob Hemesath of Decorah says his group opposed any hit to crop insurance as agriculture has already taken its share of cuts.
Hemesath says it isn’t wise to cut crop insurance at a time when farmers are struggling with high inputs and low grain prices. He says crop insurance is a budget savings as compared to Ad Hoc Disaster programs.
The Senate isn’t expected to vote on the budget deal until sometime next week.
