With a second year of drought that has hit many regions of the upper Midwest, crop insurance companies have been busy filing claims from farmers that suffered crop losses. Ellie Daisy is the Insurance Services Officer with Farm Credit Services of America at Yankton, South Dakota. She says this year she has had to deal with several more claims than last year. Daisy tells of the formula used by crop insurance agencies to define a crop loss based on ten years of production, and the approved production rate. Daisy says crop insurance companies are still tabulating the number of acres that have suffered from crop losses, and therefore they don’t have a final dollar amount as to how much more will be paid to farmers to cover this year’s crop loss. The Farm Credit Services of America official says crop insurance companies and crop adjustors followed the precipitation maps and anticipated from an early date a large number of claims would be filed. The drought monitor has been spreading covering additional counties including most of South Dakota, Nebraska, and now all of Iowa. Since the region has not had much precipitation, some people believe we may be dry again for next year. If that should happen, Daisy says crop insurance companies will be able to handle a third year of crop loss claims.
