Corn grower groups and most farmers are breathing a sigh of relief following action last week by the Senate during their budget resolution process. An attempt made by Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona to cut crop insurance never was heard and didn’t make it into the final package. South Dakota Corn Grower’s Executive Director Lisa Richardson says that’s good news.
Richardson says the issue of spending for crop insurance was already decided when the farm bill was put together. She says however it isn’t the end of the discussion and farm groups will need to weigh in with Congress going forward.
Flake had introduced an amendment that would have eliminated the premium subsidies for revenue policies with the harvest price option. Environmental groups had backed that because they think crop insurance payouts are too large.
