Not much change occurred with the crop condition from last week to this week. USDA reports the corn condition in the 18 major corn growing states is holding steady. A week ago, corn was listed as two percent very poor, seven percent as being in poor condition, 27 percent as fair, 53 percent as good, and eleven percent as being rated as excellent. This week, the USDA pegs the corn condition as three percent as very poor, seven percent as poor, 26 percent of the nation’s corn crop is listed in fair condition, more than half the corn crop, or 52 percent is rated as good condition, and 12 percent is in excellent condition. Crop development is lagging behind last year’s pace. Corn that has tasseled and started the silking stage is listed as only 15 percent, compared to last year at this same time 24 percent of the nations corn was entering the silking stage. Across the region, Nebraska has only eight percent of the corn in the silking stage. Iowa is at seven percent. Minnesota has only two percent of the corn that has tasseled. South Dakota, officially, has not seen any corn with tassels. Mark Loutsch who farms in northwest Iowa says timely rains during this last week has certainly improved his corn crop. However, as the weekly crop condition reports, Loutsch says so far, there has been few fields with tassels showing. He says in his area, he has received an inch and four tenths of rain during the last week.
