The Trump administration has reversed its earlier decision to delay collecting tariffs from U.S. trading partners due to the Covid 19 pandemic. That occurred after the Coalition for a Prosperous America objected. CPA CEO Michael Stumo says it was critical they made the Customs and Border Inspections officials know they shouldn’t be subsidizing imports.
He says had that delay gone through Americans would have ended up paying twice in favor of supporting foreign governments.
Stumo says U.S..officials need to be vigilant and continuing watching the Chinese so that when the COVID 19 cases subside they don’t allow China to flood the U.S. with goods they’ve been stockpiling.
In January the U.S. and China signed a phase one trade agreement that serves as a truce in the trade war, however the Trump administration kept duties on all products impacted by the conflict, only lowering the tariff rates on some products.
