Coalition for a Prosperous America members are applauding President Donald Trump’s administration for reaching a phase one trade deal with China. CPA CEO Michael Stumo says the tariffs are working and brought China to the table, and the deal is a good starting point.

He says while more details of the agreement have yet to come out, on the surface there’s been progress in addressing China’s stealing of intellectual property.

Stumo says there was also some progress on addressing China’s manipulation of its currency. He says achieving currency realignment is a step the U.S. can take on its own without having to ask China to do it.

Stumo says if the Chinese don’t live up to this agreement and continue stealing intellectual property as well as going forward with forced technology transfers and putting restrictions on U.S. exports, then the U.S. needs to make permanent an across the board tariff on China.
