A second consecutive loss for the men and a first league win for the women accounted for Saturday’s University of South Dakota basketball weekend.

Omaha pieced together a near flawless second half and survived South Dakota’s shot to win it in a 77-73 men’s victory at Ralston Arena Saturday.

The Mavericks (12-8, 2-3 Summit) trailed by 10 in the first half and 32-27 at halftime, but scored 50 second-half points on 59 percent shooting and limited USD to eight second-half rebounds to prevent a second home defeat in three days.

South Dakota (8-11, 3-2) made 24 of 27 free throws to keep things close, but it was long-range shooting, particularly in the second half, that made the difference. The Coyotes were 3 of 15 from three-point range, which included Adam Thoseby’s miss on an open look from the right corner with seven seconds to go that would have given USD a one-point lead. Omaha was 0 of 6 from deep in the first half, but made 7 of 12 in the second.

– Lisa Loeffler scored all 17 of her points in the first half to vault the South Dakota women’s basketball team to a 42-16 halftime lead as the Coyotes cruised past Omaha 75-51 to snap a four game losing streak on Saturday in the DakotaDome.

Loeffler was 7-of-13 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. Polly Harrington added 13 points and Raeshel Contreras added 10 points to round out South Dakota’s (10-10, 1-4) top scorers, while Tia Hemiller added six points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

The Mavericks (9-10, 1-4) shot 8-of-25 from the field in the first half and missed all three of their free throw attempts.  They finished the game shooting 35 percent from the field with Lanese Bough’s 10 points leading the way.
