North Dakota freshman Karleen Yapello volleyed the golden goal into the net in a double-overtime 1-0 victory against South Dakota in front of 442 fans at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex on Sunday.
Yapello subbed into the match for the Fighting Hawks in the 105th minute. After the Coyotes failed to clear a corner kick by North Dakota’s Kennedy Kidd, Yapello found the ball bouncing towards her. She swung a volley from the top of the 18 and the ball fell just under the crossbar, out of reach of South Dakota goalkeeper Sydney Hardin. The golden goal came in the 109th minute after a scoreless regulation.
South Dakota falls to 1-1-0 on the season, while North Dakota (1-0-1) earns its first win following a scoreless draw with Northern Iowa in its season opener.
