South Dakota senior Teivaskie Lewin and sophomore Gawain Williams competed in the Jamaican National Championships over the weekend at National Stadium.

Lewin qualified for the finals of the 110-meter hurdles, where he placed sixth in 14.13 seconds. Four of the five athletes ahead of Lewin were professionals. Omar McLeod, a former Arkansas Razorback who Lewin competed against at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships, captured the event title in 13.01 seconds. The Olympic qualifying standard for the men’s 110 hurdles is 13.47 seconds.

Williams advanced to the second round of preliminaries in the 100 meters, where he took 27th in 10.71 seconds. After Usain Bolt pulled out of the 100-meter finals due to a hamstring tear, Yohan Blake took home gold in 9.95 seconds. Bolt is still eligible for selection to the Jamaican National Team. The Olympic qualifying standard for the men’s 100 meters is 10.16 seconds.

The 2016 Olympic Games are to be held from Aug. 5 to Aug. 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
