University of South Dakota first baseman Yvon Minogue was one of four players named to the Mexican National Softball Federation Team following a two-day tryout this past weekend.
The team will compete in the Women’s World Cup July 4-9 in Oklahoma City, Okla., and in the ISF Women’s World Championships July 15-25 in Vancouver, B.C.
Minogue, who grew up less than 35 miles east of Cerritos in Corona, Calif., is eligible for the team since her grandparents were born in Mexico. She, along with Texas A&M sophomore Tori Vidales, Utah junior Anissa Urtez and Cal Poly sophomore Amanda Sandoval, emerged from a tryout that included 70-80 athletes.
“I was nervous the first day of the tryout, but was invited back and on day two I hit a home run over the school during a scrimmage,” said Minogue. “I think that sealed the deal.”
“It’s an incredible honor to represent Mexico and I’m excited for the opportunity to compete in two world events.”
Minogue recently wrapped up a four-year career in Vermillion, S.D., where she became South Dakota’s and the Summit League’s all-time leader in career hits (271) and career doubles (63). Minogue hit a program-record .403 in four seasons for the Coyotes – the fourth-best average in Summit history.
Minogue is a three-time, first-team all-Summit League honoree and earned NFCA all-region honors in each of the last two seasons. She led the Summit in hitting with a .470 average in 2015 and with a .438 average in 2016. Her career totals include 31 home runs, 143 RBIs and 140 runs scored in 204 collegiate games.
