University of South Dakota basketball coach Craig Smith has confirmed that point guard Shy McClelland has permanently left the team after being suspended.
The Milwaukee native and transfer from Mesa Community College in Arizona had started 21 games in his first season with the Coyotes. He was averaging nearly 12 points, four assists and 29 minutes a game.
Smith said last week that McClelland had been suspended indefinitely but didn’t say why.
Smith this week said McClelland decided to leave the team on his own. He said the school will “support him and help him any way we can.”
