Competing under the lights at the Mt. SAC Relays for the second consecutive year, South Dakota junior Amber Eichkorn smashed her own school record by nearly a minute in her 10,000-meter run season debut.
All three Coyotes competing in the 10,000 meters Thursday night set new personal bests.
Eichkorn clocked 34 minutes, 12.98 seconds to best her school record by 48 seconds. She also broke the state collegiate record, which was a time of 34:44.4 set by Augustana’s Pat Reisdorfer in 1980.
“I am pretty happy with the time,” said Eichkorn. “It was a good first 10,000. My focus can now shift to training and preparing for the first round.”
Eichkorn’s time currently ranks 20th in the NCAA West Region, with the top 48 advancing the NCAA West Preliminaries held in Austin, Texas, May 28-30.
Making her all-time debut in the event, freshman Bethany Kozak ran a time of 35:36.13. Kozak will rank fourth in all-time school history with that mark.
On the men’s side, junior Mubarik Musa crossed the finish line in 30:08.46 to better his career best by two seconds. Musa ranks fourth in South Dakota school history in the 10,000 meters.
