Tuesday the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a ruling that denies affordable care act tax credit premium subsidies in 36 states. The ruling impacts low and moderate income families in those states with health insurance marketplaces run by the federal government. Center for Rural Affairs John Crabtree says another court later in the day ruled the other way on the issue and this case isn’t settled yet.
Crabtree says those premium subsidies are at the core of the Affordable Care Act and are needed in rural America.
He doesn’t see Tuesday’s court decision as affecting anyone immediately that’s covered by the Affordable Care Act and receives those premium subsidies.
Crabtree says it’s possible that eventually the issue could end up in the U.S. Supreme Court.
