The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has issued a ruling that a lawsuit challenging the sale of the Pork. The Other White Meat trademarks may continue. The suit was brought by HSUS and other plaintiffs as they claim the price tag for sale of the trademarks from the National Pork Producers Council to the National Pork Board was inflated. NPPC’s Dave Warner says they wanted the case dismissed and now are reviewing what their next step will be.
He says the District Court ruling not only allows the case to continue, but also stops NPPC from making payments to the National Pork Board for those trademarks.
Warner says activists are claiming NPPC was overpaid for the sale of the trademarks.
In 2006, NPPC sold the trademarks for $35 million. Later a USDA study valued the trademarks at between $113 million and $132 million.
