Canadian and Mexican officials will be asking the WTO for permission to retaliate against the United States over the country of origin labeling law. National Pork Producer Council’s Vice President and Counsel for International Affairs, Nick Giordano says the amount Canada and Mexico is seeking is over $ 3 billion dollars.
Giordano says the only viable option is for the U.S. Senate to follow suit with the House and repeal Country of Origin Labeling.
Giordano says there is no time to fix the labeling law, because if the WTO agrees with retaliation, it would take a long time before it could be removed.
It’s not clear when the Senate will take up the COOL repeal legislation; however, Giordano says it needs to be done before the August recess.
