Nebraska State Corrections Director Mike Kenney defends his controversial program to allow prison inmates released prematurely to serve out the rest of their sentences at home.
Kenney objects to state senators on a special legislative committee calling his temporary alternative placement program illegal, insisting it was the best alternative for a handful of inmates who had been living peacefully in their communities. . .
A total of five inmates who had been mistakenly released early were placed on the program, serving from 12 to 64 days. All had to report to a parole officer twice weekly and had to wear electronic monitoring bracelets.
Kenney says, in wake of accusations leveled by a special legislative committee, he should have sought legal advice before going ahead with the program. . .
Kenney has written the committee, explaining his reasoning behind the program and denying that Governor Dave Heineman had any prior knowledge of the program.
