Opponents to North Dakota’s new corporate farming law change are working to take the issue to the voters. North Dakota Farmers Union members rallied Friday talking about their opposition to the recent change in state law allowing swine and dairy operations to be owned by corporations. State Farmers Union President Mark Watne says they have a short period of time to get the necessary signatures to put the measure on the 2016 ballot.
Watne thinks they have a good chance of getting the needed 13, 452 valid signatures before this June 18 to place it on next year’s ballot.
Watne says one of the major concerns with the new law is that it may lead to even more corporate ownership of ag operations and put more pressure on family farm operations.
Watne says they’ll try to collect 16,000 to 17,000 signatures above the 13,452 that are needed.
