A recount has confirmed Oregon’s GMO labeling initiative was defeated in November. Out of 1.5 million votes cast, the measure failed by 837 votes. South Dakota Corn Grower’s President Keith Alverson of Chester says he’s pleased the recount held up but says the battle over GMO labeling isn’t over. He says the issue needs to be handled at the national level rather than by states with piecemeal rules.
Alverson says its important consumers be informed about GMOs. He says the best way is through a national labeling regulation that’s based on sound science. Alverson says until that’s done, more and different state regulatory efforts will pop up.
Alverson says that’s why the National Corn Growers Association has come out in favor of Kansas Representative Mike Pompeo’s national GMO labeling legislation.
