An amendment on crop insurance that would have impacted large producers was left out of the farm bill passed by the Senate last week. South Dakota Corn Growers Association President Troy Knecht was pleased it was left out and says the overall measure is positive for agriculture.
He says had Senator Dick Durbin’s measure made it into the legislation it could have gummed up the whole crop insurance program which is badly needed for producers.
Knecht says while the Senate and House each have very different versions of farm legislation, he’s hoping they’ll be able to conference those successfully and come up with a final measure they can approve before the current farm bill expires.
Knecht hopes Congress will be able to find time to complete the farm bill as much of their business will be tied up with finding a new Supreme Court Justice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
