Corn Populations Showing Uneven Emergence

Corn Populations Showing Uneven Emergence

Farmers in the region are noticing uneven emergence within their corn population. Pioneer Area Agronomist Jim Ruhland says due to the cold weather in May corn seed sat in the ground and did not emerge. The result has been uneven stands and lower plant populations, especially in corn on corn. However, he says growers should not be overly concerned about substantial yield losses as a result.
Ruhland says if populations are too low farmers may need to replant, but should evaluate that with their agronomist.
Ruhland says some farmers have used rotary hoes to try to alleviate the problem and the recent rains have helped as well.
